Leather sandals are the summer pair that gets better as the season goes on, moulding to the foot instead of fighting it. Mollini cuts them in soft and full grain leathers within the sandals collection, in black, tan and brown, from a flat slide to an ankle strap.
A leather strap stretches where your foot presses and holds everywhere else. Across the first few wears it eases at exactly the points that would otherwise rub, and the footbed takes a shallow impression of your foot, so by January the sandal fits you specifically. A synthetic strap never does this, which is why it rubs in March in the same place it rubbed in November.
Leather also handles heat. It breathes, so the foot slides less on a hot day, and a leather-lined footbed is the detail worth looking for, since an unlined synthetic base undoes most of the benefit above it.
Brown, tan and the case against black
Brown leather sandals sit between the formality of black and the ease of tan, and they are the single most useful pair for an Australian summer that swings from a beach afternoon to a city dinner. The shade warms linen, denim and cream where black cuts against them.
Then choose by height. Flat sandals in leather take the daily wear, the markets and the travelling. Heeled sandals lift the same materials into an evening, where a leather ankle strap holds the foot far more securely than a synthetic one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do leather sandals stretch?
A: Yes. Leather straps ease across the first few wears and settle at the points where the foot presses hardest. Buy for a firm but not tight fit, since a sandal that is loose in store will slip once the leather relaxes.
Q: Are leather sandals better than synthetic ones?
A: For comfort and longevity, generally yes. Leather moulds to the foot, manages moisture better on hot days and can be conditioned rather than replaced. Synthetic uppers hold their shape but do not adapt, which is what causes repeated rubbing.
Q: How do I stop leather sandals rubbing?
A: Wear them for short periods at first so the straps ease gradually, and condition any stiff edge before a long day. Most rubbing settles within a few wears, though a strap pressing directly on a bone usually means the size or width is wrong.
Q: Can leather sandals get wet?
A: Occasional damp is fine, but repeated soaking dries the leather and stiffens it. Let wet sandals dry at room temperature, then condition them. Avoid wearing untreated leather sandals in salt water, which leaves marks that are difficult to remove.
